At least 16 sickened at Brooklyn school, day after 30 ill

BOROUGH PARK, Brooklyn (WABC) -- At least 16 students were sickened at a school in Brooklyn Wednesday, one day after at least 30 kids reported feeling ill.

The incident happened at PS 160, the William T. Sampson School, in Borough Park.

Police and fire crews responded to the scene, and parents were notified.

"The firefighters went in and did a sweep for hazardous materials or environmental issues," a school official said. "None were found."

Most of the students declined medical attention at the school, but many were taken to their doctor's offices by their parents.

There is no word on what specifically caused the illnesses, but authorities say the symptoms are consistent with the norovirus, commonly known as the stomach flu.

The Department of Education issued the following statement to Eyewitness News: "The safety and well-being of students and staff is our top priority. We are working closely with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to look into and address several cases of symptoms that are consistent with the norovirus, commonly known as the stomach flu, that have been reported at P.S. 160 in Brooklyn. EMS and FDNY responded, the school is following protocol and families are being notified. Out of an abundance of caution, the entire school building is being thoroughly disinfected."

The school will be open Thursday.
