NEW YORK (WABC) -- Using the elliptical at the gym can get a little boring and it's stationary, so what about taking it on the road.

The "Elliptigo" may look a little strange, but it's quickly gaining fans.

It's got two wheels, brakes, gears, and a kick stand.

This isn't a bicycle, it's an Elliptigo.

It's basically an elliptical machine that you ride outside.

You stand upright.

Personal trainer Michael Gostigian isa big fan.

"It's not impact running, essentially you get the same benefits or more actually as you balance or stabilize the bike," Gostigian said.

It's true when you crank up the resistance; you feel it in your stomach.

Boston Marathon winner Med Keflezighi uses it cross train, but Elliptigos are pricey. They start at about $2,000.

"Bike and Roll" in New York City offers rental options. They have eight Elliptigos available at three locations.

It's not just the athletes that are trying them out, tourists are too!

"They come to this location and think they want a one person bike and they see this really cool machine and say, 'what's that?'" said Nicole Mylonas, of "Bike and Roll".

So give it a whirl, you'll take on sites from a new vantage point and get a workout.

"It's basically how fast can you push yourself because you are powering this machine, so you can go as fast your legs can take it," Mylonas said.
