Fire tears through Bronx apartment building, leaving 1 dead, 3 injured

WAKEFIELD, Bronx (WABC) -- A fast-moving fire burned through an apartment building in the Bronx early Sunday, killing one person and injuring several others.

Police have identified the victim as 36-year-old James Turtein, who was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Residents of the building say the man had just returned home from the hospital Saturday, and was in a wheelchair.

The fire started at 2:30 a.m. at the building on 230th Street in the Wakefield section of the Bronx.

Police say it began in a third-floor apartment, which is where they found the victim in cardiac arrest.

The fire was brought under control in less than 45 minutes. Residents jumped from windows and climbed down fire escapes to escape the flames.

Witnesses said they heard the victim screaming from inside the apartment that he needed help because he couldn't walk.

Three other people suffered minor injuries. Several families were displaced by the fire.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, but it is not considered suspicious.
