Investigators are working to determine the cause of a deadly fire in Newark

NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- One person was killed in an overnight fire that tore through a high-rise apartment building in Newark.

The flames broke out around 1 a.m. in the city-run building on Dayton Street that is primarily occupied by senior citizens.

Heavy smoke spread throughout the building, and one resident who was carried out by rescuers was pronounced dead on the sidewalk.

He was identified as 68-year-old Tyrone Heard.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
