NEW YORK (WABC) -- A search is underway for a mentally challenged man who has been missing for over a week.

51-year-old John Estrada was last seen at about 1 p.m. on June 29th in front of 347 New York Avenue, according to the NYPD.

Police say he left the location and headed towards the train station to head home.

Estrada's sister Elizabeth says he was separated from his family moments after they located a group home for him in Brooklyn.

He told his family he wanted to walk and take the subway home.

He takes multiple medications and can communicate, the family says.

They have been placing posters in their neighborhood, near the Brooklyn location, on subways and near Aqueduct Racetrack where Estrada occasionally goes to place a bet.

Estrada is described as 6'2", 160 pounds, with hazel eyes and missing teeth. He was last seen wearing a red shirt and blue jeans.
