Sentencing for 2 men involved in fatal shooting of baseball prospect in Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. (WABC) -- Two men who pleaded guilty in the fatal shooting of a pro baseball prospect in Yonkers were sentenced Wednesday.

A Westchester County judge sentenced two of the accomplices in the case. Tejmitra Singh received 11 years in prison and Darren Dawson was sentenced to 9 years.

The sentencing of the gunman, Nashaun Hunter, was rescheduled for November 16th. He is expected to be sentenced to 25 years behind bars.

A fourth suspect, Garth O'Neil Cole, will be sentenced on Dec. 1st.

23-year-old Mike Nolan, who was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 18th round of the 2014 draft, was shot in the head in September 2015 in a Yonkers Burger King parking lot and died three weeks later.

The suspects were arrested the following March.

"I want to know why they took my son," said Nolan's mother Donna before the sentencing, an impact statement she had to deliver twice and will have to do two more times as the suspects in her son's murder are sentenced.

"The heartache is still the same, that'll never go away," she said. "And at the end of the day, Michael doesn't come home. I never get to see my son again."

"Because of four cowards, they took him just like that, no regard, no nothing," said the victim's brother, James Nolan.

Prosecutors say the drive-by shooting was payback for an earlier dispute between Nolan's friends and friends of the suspects, who traveled from the Bronx to settle the score.

"All of them together could never be a quarter of the man that my son was," said Donna Nolan.

Wednesday the judge called Singh and Dawson's actions cruel and selfish. Donna Nolan was more blunt, saying she would neither forget nor forgive.

"I wish nothing but misery on them, and I hope each and every one of them rot in hell for what you did to my family. Do not ever forget my son's name," she said.
