HARLEM, Manhattan (WABC) -- A birthday bash was held in Harlem Saturday to honor former New York City Mayor David Dinkins as he turns 90.

The Rev. Al Sharpton organized the celebration at the National Action Network.

In attendance were a number of elected officials and community leaders, including Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat, New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, former New York Governor David Paterson, and former Rep. Charles Rangel.

They sang Happy Birthday and presented the former mayor with a cake with his face on it.

Dinkins is New York City's only black mayor. He says the most memorable event of his time in office was the 1990 visit of South African leader Nelson Mandela to New York City.

Organizers expect more than 800 people to attend a party on his actual birthday, which is Monday.
