Investigation into woman's death at nursing home
N.J. Burkett reports from Medford.

MEDFORD, N.Y. (WABC) -- The Department of Health is investigating the death of a woman inside a nursing home on Long Island.

It's the same facility where several employees are already facing charges in the death of another patient.

Prosecutors say the 71-year-old woman died last week after her ventilator mechanically malfunctioned at the Medford Multicare Center for Living.

A nursing home spokesman says the ventilator alarms went off at 3:46 p.m., and the patient was declared dead two minutes later after employees tried to resuscitate her.

Nine nursing home workers are charged in the death of a 72-year-old woman in the same unit two years ago. Prosecutors say that victim died because she wasn't attached to her ventilator.

The nursing home said in a statement it's committed to providing the highest level of care.
