Dump truck collides with car, taxi on East Side; several hurt
MIDTOWN EAST, Manhattan (WABC) -- Two men were critically injured when authorities say their speeding car, blowing through numerous red lights, collided with a city DOT truck in one of two wild crashes on the East Side Thursday morning.
In the first, police say the 25-year-old driver of a Honda Civic and his 25-year-old passenger blew through multiple traffic signals at a high rate of speed northbound on Third Avenue just before 3 a.m. before colliding with a dump truck traveling across East 34th Street.
The force of collision sent the Honda into a taxi cab that was waiting for the light, and all three vehicles ended up in the westbound lanes.
Four people were injure, with the passenger of the Honda Civic the most seriously hurt. That person is listed in critical but stable condition at Bellevue Hospital. Both the passenger and driver of the Civic are expected to survive.
The driver of the taxi cab and the driver of the city DOT truck escaped with minor injuries and were treated and released.
Charges against the driver of the Honda Civic, a Yonkers resident, are pending.
About an hour later, a livery car collided with a taxi and then flipped into parked cars at the intersection of Second Avenue and East 35th Street.
One person was taken to the hospital from that crash, which happened just after 4 a.m.
