Remembering Eric Garner: 3 years later

ELIZABETH, New Jersey (WABC) -- Monday marks three years since Eric Garner died after after an NYPD officer put him in a chokehold.

A special church service was held in Elizabeth on Sunday to pay tribute to Eric Garner.

Mothers came together with a common bond that no one really wants to join. They are women who have lost their children to police and street violence. They all came together to mark the somber anniversary of the death of Garner as well as show the fight for justice is far from over.

Before heading to Eric Garner's gravesite, the mothers from around the country came to church to show their unity despite unspeakable grief. Joining Garner's mother were the mothers of victims of violence we barely knew, and others who are very well known including the mother of Ferguson victim Michael Brown, Cleveland Tamir Rice and Bronx Amadou Diallo.

"God please help us to protect the future generation," said Kadiatou Diallo.

Eric Garner's death was watched on video worldwide. He was being arrested for selling loose cigarettes. After refusing to be taken into custody, he was choked and held on the ground. He was heard complaining that he could not breathe. Garner's death re-sparked the debate over police abuse.

The Sunday service was a display of strength among mothers who have never forgotten the children they had to bury.
