Man accused of taking 2 on tour of Brooklyn city sewers via manhole

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (WABC) -- A part-time city DEP employee took two other men into a Brooklyn manhole in an apparent expedition of the sewers.

Employee Marquise Evans, 21, of Brooklyn; Damion Nieves, 35, of Brooklyn; and David Hannibal, 45, of Brooklyn, are charged with criminal trespassing.

Evans is accused of taking two others into a manhole at Avenue H and East 35th Street in East Flatbush around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

He was spotted opening the cover, disappearing inside with the other two men and replacing it, according to the New York City Police Department.

Police responded along with firefighters, and started looking through the sewers for the three men. They finally emerged and were taken into custody.

The city Department of Environmental Protection employee has been suspended.

"Entering a sewer without proper authorization and training is illegal, incredibly irresponsible and dangerous," said the city DEP said in a statement. "Illegally accessing any confined space with potentially hazardous materials or conditions risks the safety of the trespassers as well as the first responders who are called on to rescue them. The employee in question has been suspended pending further investigation."
