NJ Burkett reports from Farmingville

FARMINGVILLE, Long Island (WABC) -- Police on Long Island are investigating a murder mystery after a man was found shot to death inside his home Thursday night.

Suffolk County police officers reportedly went to check on the welfare of 54-year-old Wayne Booker, who lived on Iroquois Avenue in Farmingville, around 8:30 p.m.

A friend of Booker's had called 911 after not hearing from him. The friend had a key, and when they all entered the home, they found Booker dead of an apparent gunshot wound.

"Mr. Booker had missed that appointment, and the friend became concerned and went to check on him," Beyrer said. "A crime scene was established. Homicide squad responded. We processed the scene. The body was removed to the Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy."

Although the motive is not clear, investigators believe Booker was specifically targeted and was not the victim of a random crime. He apparently lived alone.

"We're not going to comment on suspects right now," Suffolk County police homicide commander Kevin Beyrer said. "We're investigating different motives and we're keeping an open mind on what possibly the motive could be."

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information on the case is asked to call 631-852-6392 or 1-800-220-TIPS.
