Pedestrian critical, off-duty cop hurt when truck slams into Harlem building

EAST HARLEM, Manhattan (WABC) -- A woman is in critical condition and an off-duty NYPD officer was injured when an SUV crashed into a building in East Harlem Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened at Lexington Avenue and East 102nd Street just before 2:30 p.m.

Police say the driver apparently lost control and rolled over the officer's foot before striking a female pedestrian and pinning her against a Laundromat.

It appeared the vehicle, a Land Rover, left the gas station on the corner and drove the wrong way down the one-way street.

The woman, who witnesses say had been doing laundry just prior to the crash, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

"All you saw was her head, hunched over the hood of the car," witness Cecilia Neives said. "And there was no movement. That's when we were all crying when we saw the blanket go on. But then once they hoisted her up and picked her up on top of the hood, you saw that she moved her head. They immediately brought the oxygen tank and they strapped her (down)."

Witnesses said the driver simply put his head down in his hands when he realized what had happened. He was cuffed and led away by officers. It's not yet clear if he will face any charges.
