Pedestrian struck and killed in Islip by police car responding to 911 call

ISLIP (WABC) -- Police are investigating after a man was struck and killed by a police car in Suffolk County.

Investigators say 54-year old Craig Schiffer was crossing Main Street in Islip at about 10:30 Saturday night when he was hit by a cruiser driven by two officers responding to a 911 call in East Islip.

Schiffer, of East Meadow, was transported by Islip Exchange Ambulance Company to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where he was later pronounced dead.

The police vehicle, which was occupied by two officers, was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. No one else was injured.
