Bricks fall off Bronx building, woman injured

CLAREMONT, Bronx (WABC) -- Police have determined that several bricks from a Bronx building that struck a woman late Tuesday afternoon, fell from the rooftop and were not thrown.

It happened on Morris Avenue in the Claremont section around 4:30 p.m.

The brick hurtled to the ground from as high as seven stories-up, and left a 66-year-old grandmother barely conscious and bleeding on sidewalk.

Witnesses said she was sitting on the steps with her daughter when she was struck in the back of the head.

"Oh, my God, I thought she was dead. I thought she was dead," said Carlos Cruz, a neighbor.

"I see her from the window, she was outside and I see the blood and the bricks and I'm like, what's going on? They say they don't know where they came from, they just hit her and she fell, yeah," said Tayah Johnson, the victim's granddaughter.

Detectives converged on the neighborhood where the pavement was littered with dusty fragments of red brick and stained with blood.

The brick facade of the building appeared intact. There were no other bricks along the roofline.

The NYPD determined there was no criminality in the case.

The victim was rushed to Lincoln Hospital where she is in the Intensive Care Unit and listed in stable condition.
