SANTA FE, New Mexico (WABC) -- A Santa Fe police officer rescued an 87-year-old woman from her burning car on Friday after her tire caught fire.

Deborah Spear was driving on a flat tire to see her doctor at Christus St. Vincent Hospital when sparks ignited the front of her car.

She was unaware of the flames until Officer Jimmy Madison started yelling at her to get out of the vehicle.

Officer Madison was able to get Spear out in time, retrieve her cane from the car, and then managed to put out the fire using a fire extinguisher.

Spear said she normally brings her dog with her while she drives, but was thankful that she just happened to leave him home that day.

Spear was checked for smoke inhalation, but is said to be doing fine according to police.
