Six postal service trucks damaged in Chelsea garage fire

CHELSEA, Manhattan (WABC) -- An investigation is underway after six U.S. Postal Service trucks were damaged in a fire that broke out on the third floor of a garage in Chelsea.

The 3-alarm fire started around 10:30 p.m. Saturday inside the vehicle maintenance facility on 24th Street and 11th Avenue, just off the West Side Highway.

FDNY crews responded to the scene, and the fire was placed under control around midnight.

There are no reports of injuries, or how much mail may have been damaged. There is no word on whether there were any holiday packages on the trucks at the time.

It is still unclear how the fire started.

The U.S. Postal Service released a statement that read in part:

"No mail was in the vehicles, in the facility or damaged due to the fire. This is a four-story parking facility for postal assigned vehicles which, at full capacity, houses approximately 350 vehicles. Access to the facility and the remaining postal vehicles vehicles has been restored. Local postal officials are making adjustments to vehicle assignments today and there will be no impact to customer deliveries or collections. An investigation into the source of the fire continues. "
