Police ID person of interest in homicide, sources say he abandoned daughter at NYC bus terminal

MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- Police have identified the man who may have killed his estranged wife in Connecticut and apparently abandoned his young daughter at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City, sources say.

The homicide happened in Stamford, the sources said. The father, believed to be Elmer Gomez Ruono, 32, then brought his 5-year-old daughter to the Port Authority before taking off.

Just before 10 a.m. Monday, commuters noticed the young child by herself for an extended period of time and notified Port Authority police.

Sources said the girl did not appear harmed or traumatized, but they believe she may have been a witnessed some of the crime.

Police interviewed the girl, and she told them her father instructed her to wait for him until he returned.

Detectives in Stamford combed through the apartment for clues.

Neighbors say the family moved in to 398 Courtland Avenue over the weekend. The little girl managed to give police enough information to find the home where her mother was killed. She had lived there for only a day.

They did not hear anything out of the ordinary, so they were shocked when police knocked on their doors and told them what happened.

"I don't even know what's going on. I just heard that someone was killed," said Jacob Hwang, a neighbor.

"As a father, I'm glad nothing happened to the little girl. It's unfortunate that this happened. Hopefully the little girl did not witness anything," said Pete Desantis, a neighbor.

Police say that Gomez Ruono is a person of interest in the homicide in Stamford.

He's described as approximately 5'8" tall, about 140 lbs, with black long hair, with a medium build and medium complexion.
