Victim's family speaks out after cab driver attacked with bottle in the Bronx

SOUNDVIEW, Bronx (WABC) -- There are new details about a vicious attack on a cab driver in the Bronx.

The victim, a livery driver for about two years, is recovering after his face was severely cut when he was assaulted with a bottle on Saturday.

Now, Ataur Rahman's family is speaking out.

The incident happened at the intersection of East 172nd Street and St. Lawrence Avenue just before midnight. The driver had dropped off his fare about a half a block away when he realized his back door was left open, apparently deliberately.

When he got out to shut the door, he was jumped by the two men, hit in the face with what police believe was a champagne bottle.

He suffered a fractured jaw and needed 12 stitches on his lips, and relatives say he lost somewhere between 10 and 12 teeth. Rahman was also robbed of more than $1,300 cash and his jacket.

He is recovering at the hospital with his family by his side and New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and is said to be traumatized, and they say he is not going to go back and work as a driver again.

"He is very scared right now," son Limon Mahmdur said. "He is having a phobia. He keeps telling us, 'Don't go out. Someone is going to come in. Make sure you close the doors.' He's in danger right now, and in a critical situation. They could have just killed him."

It appears that Rahman will make a full recovery, at least physically. His first surgery is scheduled for Tuesday.

Police arrested 16-year-old Rondell Mines on Sunday morning and charged him with robbery and assault, but they are still looking for a second suspect.
