EAST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- Good news for those of you who avoid walking on subway grates while wearing high heels - high heel friendly grates!
The MTA unveiled the new grates on Monday, when announcing completions of two contracts on East Side Access, the mega-project that will bring Long Island Rail Road Service to Grand Central Terminal.
The heel-friendly grates will be above the East 55th Street Ventilation Facility between Park and Madison Avenue. They are made with slip-resistant surfaces, and the openings between the cross-bars are only a half an inch wide, the MTA said.
East Side access is the largest transportation infrastructure construction project in the country. It is expected to fully open in 2022.
