Horse gallops away from NYPD officer in Times Square

TIMES SQUARE (WABC) -- A horse galloped away in Times Square Wednesday night.

It happened around 7:25 p.m. in front of 147 W. 47th Street.

Fortunately, Gunny the horse didn't look too bad after his crazy night in Times Square.

"It looked like some mad horse with no jockey," a witness said.

Police rushed in to Times Square Wednesday night to search for Gunny after he bucked his mounted unit officer, after being spooked by a loud noise.

The officer was dragged a bit, but was eventually able to get free from horse.

"I could see the horse running out of control," said Ace Guzman, an eyewitness.

It was some sight. Thousands saw the horse running free in Times Square, in rush hour.

Gunny did do some minor damage to three cars, but he wasn't out of control. He knew exactly where he was going.

He galloped straight over to the parking garage on W. 47th street, where the mounted unit hangs out when they're on break, and sauntered right up to his best friend.

"He went right up to another horse, it was weird," a witness said.

That is where police found him and New Yorkers were a little surprised but not taken off their own stride.

The officer was taken to Bellevue Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A police investigation is ongoing.
