NEW ROCHELLE, Westchester County (WABC) -- A non-profit group handed out backpacks to underprivileged children in New Rochelle, just days after someone stole hundreds of the items from its facilities.

Organizers with Hope Community Services say thanks to the help of the community, the 10th annual New Rochelle Backpack Giveaway was able to take place.

Someone stole about 250 bags worth $10,000 from the organization's office this week.

But the organization was able to replace the backpacks and supplies.

"Response from the community has been incredible," said Carol Troum of Hope Community Services.

Baseball Hall of Famer and former New York Yankee Mariano Rivera and his wife, a pastor at Refugio De Esparanza Church, have partnered with the event the last three years.

"It's about the whole community, serving, help others, help those in need, help those you can help," said Rivera.
