Andrew Miller to resume duties as Yanks' closer, Joe Girardi says

NEW YORK -- The Yankeesplan to have closer Andrew Miller back when they take the field against the visiting Oakland Athletics on Wednesday night.

Manager Joe Girardi said Miller will likely to be activated before the game. Miller was in the Yankees clubhouse before Tuesday night's game.

Miller, who went on the DL with a forearm strain on June 10, threw a scoreless inning Monday night for Triple A Scranton.

"I felt crisp and sharp warming up and being in the game," said Miller, who allowed two hits and struck out one in his inning. "I felt it was what I needed to see."

Miller had been lights-out before his injury, collecting 17 saves and holding opposing hitters to a 0.90 batting average over 26 1/3 innings. He also had the highest strikeouts-per-nine innings ratio in the American League, fanning 43 hitters.

In his absence, Dellin Betances, selected for his second All-Star Game in two big league seasons, slid into the closer's role and had seven saves.

Girardi said Miller would immediately resume his role as the Yankees closer with Betances moving back to the eighth inning

"Dellin's done a great job," Miller said. "The team as a whole hasn't missed a lot."
