Argentine club says Red Bulls agreed $6.25m deal for Gamarra

The New York Red Bulls have agreed a $6.25 million transfer fee with Atletico Huracan forwingerAlejandro Romero Gamarra, theArgentine club says.

The deal would be by far the largest in the MLS team's history, but the Red Bulls did not confirm the purchase ahead of the holiday weekend.

But once personal terms with the 22-year-old known as "El Kaku" are finalized, he appears set to break the club transfer record, set in 2015 with the $2.2 million of Gonzalo Veron.

Gamarra scored once with three assists in the Argentine top flight last season. He previously played with Argentina at the 2015 Under-20 World Cup.

The Red Bulls have room for a new designated player after declining Veron's option after the season, and the attacker joined D.C. United in the Re-Entry Draft last week.

Reports this month have also suggested Sacha Kljestan, a 2016 MVP finalist, could be on his way out amid links to Los Angeles FC and Minnesota United.

The move for Gamarra would also continue the modest reversal of parent company Red Bull's unwillingness to spend big on its MLS team over the past three years. The club went from the third-highest MLS team salary in 2014 to the bottom the next year, and has been 14th the past two seasons.

As part of the deal, Huracan said it would retain 20 percent of any future sale for Gamarra.
