Cuban infielder Yulieski Gourriel works out for Mets

WASHINGTON -- The New York Mets worked out Cuban infielder Yulieski Gourriel on Monday at the team's complex in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

General manager Sandy Alderson, special assistant J.P. Ricciardi, international scouting director Chris Becerra, pro scouting director Jim D'Aloia and scout Roy Smith attended the 90-minute workout.

"I haven't really got any details on the workout, but he did work out for us," assistant general manager John Ricco said Monday afternoon in Washington, where the Mets are poised to open a series against the Nationals. "We had a pretty good-size group of scouts there to watch him."

Gourriel, 32, posted on Instagram a pair of photos wearing Mets apparel at the team's minor-league complex.

Gourriel, who defected from Cuba, was declared a free agent by Major League Baseball earlier this month.

ESPN's Jim Bowden has identified the Los Angeles Angels, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees and Houston Astros as other interested teams.

"He's working out for several teams and [his agent] is trying to gauge the market for him, so I don't know what their timeline is," Ricco said.

The Mets remain interested despite signing Jose Reyes to a minor-league deal on Saturday. Reyes should be manning third base with the Mets in roughly a week. David Wright might be lost for the season or beyond after undergoing surgery to address a herniated disk in his neck.
