Former New York Giants running back David Wilson, who was forced to retire from the NFL last season due to spinal stenosis, is ready for his second career to take flight.

Wilson is taking his first step toward qualifying for the USATF Outdoor Championships in the triple jump at this weekend's Adidas Grand Prix NYC -- his first professional track and field event.

His ultimate goal is to qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, but the former high school national champion in the event must first finish among the top 3 at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials.

Wilson, who turns 24 next week, was advised by doctors to stop playing football due to the spinal stenosis, a narrowing of his spinal canal. The first-round pick in the 2012 draft retired in August, having rushed for 504 yards and scored seven total touchdowns during his NFL career.

The Virginia Tech product placed sixth in the triple jump at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
