ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan has a new pen pal.

Wolverine State native Derek Jeter wrote a letter to the football team urging it to stay "humble, yet hungry" prior to Saturday's top-10 matchup with Wisconsin.

"One of the most important things you can do is respect the game," Jeter wrote. "You do that by respecting the process, the training, the grind, the details, your coaching and the people committed to seeing you succeed."

Jeter, who like the Michigan program is sponsored by Michael Jordan's Jumpman brand, is an annual attendee of football games in Ann Arbor. His letter of encouragement also came with T-shirts with "Re2pect Is Earned" printed on the chest.

The "Re2pect" line is derived from the Jordan brand's campaign during Jeter's final year with the New York Yankees.

Jeter also wrote a note to the Michigan basketball programs, which unveiled their new Jumpman uniforms in front of a few thousand fans at the school's basketball arena Friday night.

Several players wore the Jeter-themed shirts during warm-ups Saturday afternoon. The fourth-ranked Wolverines take on No. 8 Wisconsin at 3:30 p.m. ET (ABC).
