The New Jersey Devils announced Wednesday that they have placed veteran forward Dainius Zubrus on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract.
Once Zubrus clears, at noon ET on Thursday, the Devils are expected to buy out the remaining one year on his contract. Zubrus is due $3.1 million this season.
The announcement is not altogether surprising, considering Zubrus' significant dip in production last season, when he finished with just four goals and 10 points in 74 games with the Devils.
Zubrus, 37, has played for the Devils since the 2007-08 season.
