Brooklyn Nets reserve point guard Greivis Vasquez will not play for Venezuela in the Olympics because he is still recovering from injury.
"After a great deal of consultation with the Nets and team doctors, I have been advised that unfortunately it will be necessary for me to withdraw from Olympic competition. While it would have been a great honor and a dream to join my teammates and represent our country in Rio, the medical staff feels that it is essential that I devote this time to work towards getting healthy for the upcoming season," Vasquez said in a statement.
Vasquez underwent ankle surgery in mid-December while with the Milwaukee Bucks and was limited to just 23 games last season as a result.
Vasquez signed a one-year contract with the Nets that could be worth $5 million with incentives.
