Mariners to offer general manager job to Jerry Dipoto

The Seattle Mariners will offer their vacant general manager position to Jerry Dipoto, a source told ESPN MLB Insider Jim Bowden on Monday.

Dipoto was hired by the Boston Red Sox as a special consultant in early August after the 47-year-old executive resigned as general manager of the Anaheim Angels on July 1. Dipoto had been tasked with helping the Red Sox with player evaluation and offseason planning, with the understanding that it was not a permanent position.

Jeff Kingston has had the GM job for the Mariners on an interim basis since JackZduriencik was relieved of his duties on Aug. 29.

Among the decisions still to be determined for Seattle is the future of current manager Lloyd McClendon, who is under contract through 2016. Team president Kevin Mather said last month that he would encourage keeping McClendon, but that it will be up to the next GM to decide who Seattle's field manager will be in 2016.
