Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson has surgery for torn thumb ligament

NEW YORK -- New York Mets right fielder Curtis Granderson underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb.

The team indicated that Granderson will be fully recovered for spring training.

Granderson previously indicated that he suffered the injury on a slide in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series against the Chicago Cubs. He nonetheless produced three homers during the World Series against the Kansas City Royals.

Granderson capably stepped into the leadoff role for the Mets this season. He hit .259 with 26 homers and 70 RBIs and had a .364 on-base percentage in 157 games. He had a franchise-record seven leadoff home runs, passing the single-season mark previously held by Jose Reyes (six in 2006).

Granderson is a finalist for the National League Gold Glove in right field, along with the St. Louis Cardinals' Jason Heyward and theWashington Nationals' Bryce Harper.

Granderson, 34, is signed with the Mets for two more seasons. He will earn $16 million in 2016 and $15 million in 2017.
