Mets place Dillon Gee on waivers, plan to send him to Triple-A

ATLANTA -- The New York Mets have failed to trade right-hander Dillon Gee despite some interest from other clubs and instead have placed him on outright waivers for the purpose of sending him to Triple-A Las Vegas, a source told ESPN.com.

Barring a claim, Gee would clear waivers at 1 p.m. ET Tuesday.

Gee was designated for assignment last Monday, a day after surrendering eight runs in 3 2/3 innings in a spot start against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field. The outing lifted his ERA to 5.90.

He recently had been reassigned to the bullpen, when the Mets scrapped a six-man rotation.

With more than three years of major league service, Gee could refuse an assignment to Las Vegas if he clears waivers and declare free agency. However, he is unlikely to do so because he would vacate the $3.1 million still owed to him this season.

If Gee reports to Las Vegas and is not promoted to the Mets later in the year, he also could declare free agency shortly after the season.
