New York Giants running back Rashad Jennings will not play Sunday against the Washington Redskins, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Jennings, who was listed as questionable on Friday, injured his left thumb in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints.

He wore a small cast during practice this week and was expected to remain the Giants' starter against the Redskins.

"[Jennings] is a veteran back. He's played a lot of football in this league," coach Ben McAdoo said Friday. "He's earned his spot. And yeah, I'm comfortable with it."

Jennings sported a small cast covering his left thumb and wrist throughout the week. He was expected to play with the limitations it provided.

Veteran Shane Vereen is likely to take a majority of the snaps Sunday against the Redskins. Orleans Darkwa should also enter the mix.

Jennings and Vereen had close to a 50-50 playing time split in the first two games. Jennings is the Giants' leading rusher with 102 yards on 31 carries (3.3 ypc).

Vereen has 80 yards on 20 carries (4.0 ypc).
