Yankees fan asks girlfriend to marry him and briefly loses ring

NEW YORK -- The biggest error during the Yankees-Red Sox game nearly occurred in the left-field stands when a man asking his girlfriend to marry him dropped the ring as he proposed on the humongous video board in center field.

"I literally started crying because I thought it was lost," said 29-year-old Andrew Fox of New Castle, Pennsylvania. "It happened so fast."

His girlfriend, Heather Terwilliger of Fredonia, New York, had no idea he was going to propose. She didn't even know they were going to attend a game at Yankee Stadium Tuesday, let alone be shown on the video board with her boyfriend on one knee. With the whole stadium watching, he went to one knee, opened the Kay Jewelers box, and there was nothing.

"I didn't know how to react," Terwilliger said as the crowd gasped.

Fans in their left-field section searched for the ring, but no one could find it. Fox feared it had dropped down from their second-level seats to the first.

It took about five minutes, though it felt like 15 to Terwilliger, for the search to end happily. Finally, when all hope seemed lost, they looked in the cuffs of Terwilliger's bell-bottom jeans -- and there it was.

"As every minute passed by, I was like, 'Oh my God, if we didn't find it by now,'" Fox said.

Yankees public address announcer Paul Olden told the entire crowd, "The ring has been found!" She said yes.
