MIDTOWN, N.Y. (WABC) -- A man was struck by an MTA bus in Midtown Manhattan late Wednesday afternoon.

It happened just before 4 p.m. on Fifth Avenue between 57th and 56th streets, in front of Trump Tower.

The MTA said the man ran out into the street between two cars and was hit by the bus, which was headed toward downtown from the Bronx at the time.

Right now, police are trying to figure out what exactly happened.

There were passengers on the bus at the time. They told Eyewitness News' Josh Einiger that the man was in his 60s.

A woman who was riding near the front of the bus said she saw the man come out of nowhere, and then everyone on the bus was yelling "Stop! Back up, back up!"

Another witness said the bus ran over the man's legs, and he was yelling for the driver to back up.

The man was taken to the hospital.
