Jeremiah Ryan was 17 at the time of the fatal shooting, now 18, and the sentencing arrangement was part of a plea deal that avoided a painful trial.

The Bronx District Attorney's Office says the arrangement was made "in full consultation with the entire family."
Angellyh Yambo's mother, Yanely Henriquez, delivered the victim impact statement at the sentencing.
"My daughter, she had a bright future," Henriquez said. "She wanted to be a doctor, she loved makeup, she was a very out-spoken girl. We loved her because of her sassiness and how she was. And we lost that."
Yambo was shot when Ryan was arguing with two other men and fired at least six shots, striking Yambo, a 17-year-old boy, and a 17-year-old girl. The others shot survived.

Yambo's picture is on t-shirts now and posters - a walking vigil to a life unfinished. She wanted to be a doctor and give back to her community.
"The defendant was in a dispute with two men when he fired multiple shots from a "ghost gun," striking Angellyh Yambo, 16, and two more teens who were walking home from school. His actions ended the life of a beautiful young girl and shattered the lives of the survivors and the families of the victims," said Darcel D. Clark, Bronx District Attorney.
Ryan pleaded guilty to second-degree murder back on August 4, 2023.
The family has set up a foundation in Yambo's name to try to divert young people from guns and violence-a legacy for her of hope.

"You have to find your ways and think more intelligently about what you want in life," Henriquez said. "We call our kids the future. Guns are not the future."
