Friday is the last day of school for New York City public school students and it's also the deadline for families in some districts to apply for free 2-K seats.
Families must submit their applications by 11:59 p.m. Friday for a chance to secure one of 2,000 available seats. The seats are available in School Districts 6, 10, 18, 23 and 27.
The initial communities that will receive 2,000 2-K seats are:
- Washington Heights and Inwood
- Fordham and Kingsbridge
- East Brooklyn: Canarsie, Brownsville, and Ocean Hill
- Ozone Park and Rockaways
Mayor Mamdani announced that most of the seats will be offered as full-day programs operating from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., 260 days a year.
Applications can be submitted through MySchools.nyc, by calling 718-935-2009 or by visiting one of the city's Family Welcome Centers.
To help promote the program, the city recently held a contest to create a 2-K jingle. On Thursday, the mayor visited an early childhood education program in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, where he was joined by contest winner Allegra Levy and her band.
The 2-K program will launch this fall with 2,000 free seats and expand over the next four years.
