President Biden delivers address at UN General Assembly

Updated 27 minutes ago
MIDTOWN EAST, Manhattan (WABC) -- President Joe Biden spoke at the United Nations' 79th General Assembly on Tuesday.

His address was one of his last as president on the world stage.

Biden used the wide-ranging address to speak to the need to end the Middle East conflict and the 17-month-old civil war in Sudan and to highlight U.S. and Western allies' support for Kyiv since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

His appearance before the international body also offered Biden one of his last high-profile opportunities as president to make the case to keep up robust support for Ukraine, which could be in doubt if former President Donald Trump, who has scoffed at the cost of the war, defeats Vice President Kamala Harris in November.

Road closures and heightened security amid UN General Assembly

Roughly 140 other world leaders and dignitaries were in attendance for the speech.

Biden arrived in New York on Monday and he, along with first lady Jill Biden, made their meeting rounds.

One stop included the Clinton Global Annual Initiative meeting, where the he was awarded the 2024 Global Citizen Award by former President Bill Clinton.

The entirety of Midtown East in Manhattan is expected to be snarled as numerous streets have been closed in anticipation of the week-long session.

Several protests are slated to take place, which will add to the congestion and heightened security in the area of the United Nations.
