Woman fatally shot in face in front of son as husband robbed in Lower East Side

LOWER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- An active manhunt is underway to find the gunmen who shot and killed a woman in front of her family on the Lower East Side.

It happened on Market Street just after 11 p.m. Monday night.

Police say two suspects followed a man into a condo building and into the elevator up to the eighth floor and tried to rob him.

The robbery was thwarted by the man's wife, Ying Zhu Liu, 57, who heard the commotion in the hallway. Liu apparently came outside of the apartment into the hallway with the couple's son and was shot in the face.

The suspects were able to get down from the eighth floor and out of the building with the man's phone and $100, according to sources.

Neighbors in the building say there was another robbery just this past Sunday down the street. They are now left wondering if it's part of a pattern.

"It's very scary but I think it's the same two people who robbed a guy at 10:30 Sunday night, they robbed another guy, I think two young kids, it's terrible," neighbor Ann Valentino said.

"Where are the cops, I don't see a lot of cops around here, you know, more cops, Eric Adams do something about it," neighbor Emerson Coreis said.

Officials say one of the gunmen one was wearing a black and red-hooded jacket, white sneakers, dark pants and black ski mask.

The second was wearing a black-hooded coat, black ski mask, black pants and black and white sneakers.

There are cameras throughout the building and police do have video of the crime from beginning to end, but they have not yet released the video publicly.
