Voltage reductions remain as Con Ed makes some progress on power outages from intense heat

Updated 2 hours ago
NEW YORK (WABC) -- Con Edison said they made progress on the power outages affecting New York City and Westchester.

The company spent much of Thursday trying to restore power to thousands after the extreme heat caused scattered outages.

Despite the progress, there are still 8% voltage reductions in multiple city neighborhoods.

The area is bounded on the north by Newtown Creek, on the south by Pacific Street and Fulton Street, on the east by Throop Avenue and Graham Avenue, and on the west by the East River. It includes 133,000 customers in parts, or all, of these neighborhoods: Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Bedford Stuyvesant, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

The voltage reduction also affects an area bounded by Pacific Street on the north, 20th and 23rd Street and Greenwood Cemetery on the south, Prospect Park on the east, and 5th Avenue on the west.

Nearly 7,000 customers (6,962) remained without power in New York City by Friday morning.

  • Bronx - 558

  • Queens - 5,109

  • Brooklyn - 1,203

  • Manhattan - 0

  • Staten Island - 92

Customers are also asked to limit unnecessary use of air conditioning. If you have two air conditioners, use only one and set it to the highest comfortable temperature.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday said state officials are monitoring the electrical grid to ensure it can withstand increased energy use.

"My team has been coordinating with Con-Ed, NYISO and New York City leaders to ensure all large consumers are able to switch to other fuel sources have done so to reduce their usage," Hochul said. "Due to the increase in energy demand and unexpected load challenges, I am also calling on New Yorkers to do their part to proactively conserve electricity if safe to do so by setting air conditioning units between 75-78 degrees and avoiding unnecessary appliance use. These small steps can go a long way."

Customers can report outages and check service restoration status at www.conEd.com/reportoutage, or with our mobile app for iOS or Android devices, or by calling 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). When calling, customers should report whether their neighbors also have lost power. Customers who report outages will receive updates with their estimated restoration times as they become available.
