NEW YORK (WABC) -- Con Edison is asking customers in some parts of the area to conserve energy to protect the power grid as temperatures continue to sizzle on Thursday.
Customers in certain areas of Yonkers, Pelham, Mount Vernon, Bronxville, Eastchester, New Rochelle and the town of Mamaroneck in Westchester, and in certain areas of the Northeast Bronx and City Island, to conserve energy while crews repair equipment.
Officials previously asked customers in the northwest section of the Bronx and the northern tip of Manhattan to conserve energy, including, Riverdale, Marble Hill, Kingsbridge, and Van Cortlandt Park.
Con Edison has reduced voltage in the area by 8% to protect equipment and maintain service as crews make repairs.
Gov. Kathy Hochul said state officials are monitoring the electrical grid to make sure it can withstand the increase in energy usage.
"My team has been coordinating with Con-Ed, NYISO and New York City leaders to ensure all large consumers able to switch to other fuel sources have done so to reduce their usage," Hochul said. "Due to the increase in energy demand and unexpected load challenges, I am also calling on New Yorkers to do their part to proactively conserve electricity if safe to do so by setting air conditioning units between 75 - 78 degrees and avoiding unnecessary appliance use. These small steps can go a long way."
ConEd is asking customers not to use energy-intensive appliances such as washers, dryers, and microwaves until crews complete repairs.
Customers are also asked to limit unnecessary use of air conditioning. If you have two air conditioners, use only one and set it to the highest comfortable temperature.
The company also asks that customers refrain from charging electric vehicles in these neighborhoods, except when necessary, while repairs are made.
