Search underway for 2 missing people in Montville, New Jersey
Police say an active death investigation is underway in the area where the 2 went missing
MONTVILLE, New Jersey (WABC) -- A death investigation is underway Tuesday in New Jersey, in an area where two people went missing over the weekend.
Officials say the investigation is in progress off Stony Brook Road in Montville Township.
It comes after Montville Police put out photos of 77-year-old John Higgins and 87-year-old Virginia Taetzch.
The two lived at Cedar Crest Senior Living and were last seen at Pyramid Mountain on Sunday around 1 p.m.
There's no word on how they left the facility, but Cedar Crest put out a statement expressing concern for two of its residents.
"Our thoughts are with them and their families, and we are hopeful for their safe return," the statement said. The safety and well-being of our community members is always our highest priority. We are grateful to the local authorities leading the response. Our team will continue to work closely with them and the residents' families to support the ongoing search effort.
On Tuesday afternoon, police said the search was over - then a short time later - police told Eyewitness News that a death investigation was underway in the area where they went missing.
Authorities have not yet confirmed if the missing individuals are the victims linked to the investigation.
There's no word from investigators on the exact cause of death or what they discovered.
The case was being investigated by the Morris County Prosecutors Office Major Crimes Unit along with the sheriff and local police in Montville, and a few other local police departments.
