Mamdani vows to maintain bold agenda, fight for all New Yorkers

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Zohran Mamdani was officially sworn in as mayor of New York City just after midnight Thursday, but politicians and other supporters are gathered later in the day at City Hall for a larger ceremony.

Mamdani is the city's first Muslim mayor, its first of South Asian descent and the first to be born in Africa. At 34, he is also the city's youngest mayor since the late 19th century.

The democratic socialist takes office after an historic campaign made "affordability" a national buzzword across the political spectrum.

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders administered the public ceremonial oath of office to Mamdani at today's event, broadcast on Channel 7 and streaming on ABC 7 New York.

Zohran Mamdani signs first 2 executive orders as NYC mayor

In his first two executive orders, announced in a press release, Zohran Mamdani revoked all executive orders issued after Sept. 26, 2024, the day former New York City Mayor Eric Adams was indicted, saying "that was a date that marked a moment when many New Yorkers decided politics held nothing for them."

It also established that he will have five deputy mayors, less than during the Adams administration.

The deputy mayors include the following:

  • First Deputy Mayor

  • Deputy Mayor of Housing and Planning

  • Deputy Mayor of Economic Justice

  • Deputy Mayor of Operations

  • Deputy Mayor of Health and Human Services
  • "Today marks the first step in building an administration that works for all New Yorkers," said Mayor Zohran Mamdani. "We've established the foundations of it, and now it's time to deliver on our affordability agenda, tackle the challenges facing New Yorkers, and usher in a new era for New York City - one that proves that government can deliver for working people."

When asked about the future of the Rent Guidelines Board, Mamdani said, "I continue to be confident that the Rent Guidelines Board will assess the landscape of tenants for rent-stabilized units across this city and find they're in dire need of relief."

Also, Mamdani said he will keep the recently-created Mayor's Office to Combat Antisemitism.

Mamdani promises to govern 'expansively and audaciously'

"Beginning today, we will govern expansively and audaciously. We may not always succeed, but never will we be accused of lacking the courage to try," Mamdani told a cheering crowd.

"To those who insist that the era of big government is over, hear me when I say this: No longer will City Hall hesitate to use its power to improve New Yorkers' lives," he said.

This is part of his first public address to New Yorkers.

    Bernie Sanders swears in Mamdani

The crowd rose to its feet as Senator Bernie Sanders took the stage to swear in Mamdani.

Sanders, praising Mamdani's campaign, told the crowd that "When people stand up, there's nothing we cannot accomplish."

He also applauded Mamdani's ambition to use government power to help lift the millions of people struggling with the city's high cost of living.

Sanders insisted that doing so - partly by raising taxes on the rich - wouldn't be radical.

"In the richest country in the history of the world, making sure that people can live in affordable housing is not radical," he told the crowd. "It is the right and decent thing to do."

Bernie Sanders spoke to the crowd, before performing a ceremonial swearing in of the new mayor.

He then presided over a ceremonial swearing-in of Mamdani as mayor. He officially took the oath of office just after midnight.
