LONGWOOD, Bronx (WABC) -- A speeding driver is on the run after a violent chain-reaction crash Tuesday night in the Bronx left a bicyclist dead, another person injured and multiple vehicles damaged, police said.
Investigators are searching for the driver, who allegedly fled the scene after abandoning the vehicle involved in the collision.
According to police, the driver of a black BMW struck two unoccupied vehicles before crashing into a Hyundai Sonata and a 51-year-old bicyclist on Bruckner Boulevard in the Longwood section of the Bronx. The force of the impact pushed the Hyundai into another vehicle, creating a multi-vehicle wreck that left debris scattered across the roadway.
The bicyclist was rushed to a hospital but could not be saved. The driver of the Hyundai Sonata was also hospitalized and is listed in stable condition.
Police said the BMW driver abandoned the vehicle after the crash and got into another car before fleeing the area. Investigators are working to identify and locate the suspect.
Witnesses told police the BMW appeared to be speeding before the initial collision. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the crash or the driver to contact the NYPD.
