NEW YORK (WABC) -- President Donald Trump spent the night in Trump Tower, a rarity in recent years, before a TV news interview in Midtown Friday morning as he started his day in New York City.
The NYPD is froze the route from Trump Tower to the News Corp. building at 7 a.m., snarling Midtown traffic on Fifth and Sixth avenues, between West 57th and West 42nd streets.
The president is spending the rest of the day in Trump Tower before departing after 9:30 p.m. to Trump National Golf Club Bedminster, where he will spend the weekend. He plans to return to Washington on Sunday afternoon.
President Trump is already getting the highest level security in the history of presidential visits to New York City, and every visit since last summer's assassination attempt seems to ramp up his protection another notch.
However, Friday morning, the Secret Service and the NYPD seemed to step it up even further, removing every vehicle on the route for the duration of his travels.
Midtown disruptions are rare. President Trump almost never spends the night at Trump Tower since changing his primary residence to Florida in 2019. His last overnight visit appears to have been in December. He is expected to return later this month to attend the United Nations General Assembly.
In the aftermath of the Charlie Kirk shooting, there are reports that the Trump administration is having broader discussions about the Secret Service providing even tighter security moving forward.
