Kevin Durant unveils new basketball court through 'Build It and They Will Ball' on Lower East Side

LOWER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- "If you build it, they will ball."

That's the goal of NBA star Kevin Durant, who unveiled a newly refurbished basketball court and mural Monday on the Lower East Side.

It was built as a part of Durant's "Kevin Durant Charity Foundation" "Build it and They Will Ball" initiative.

Monday's unveiling marks the first visit to New York City from KDCF's signature program, "Build It and They Will Ball," and the eighth city in total to benefit from the program.

"Build It and They Will Ball" works to build or fully renovate basketball courts in under-served communities both domestically and abroad.

The newly unveiled court is part of the Lower East Side Park, where the East Side Community Schools will use it to their full advantage.

The school submitted pictures of their previous court to Durant's agency, Roc Nation Sports.

After seeing the condition of the old court, East Side Community Schools was the winner, and its basketball court underwent a full renovation, a project that took nearly a year to complete.

Now finished, it's even painted in the same colors of the NBA Champion Warriors.

There are some 1,800 basketball courts within the five boroughs of New York City, and thanks to Kevin Durant, this one instantly became one of the best.
