Waiting for a UPS package? Expect service impacts during pope visit

NEW YORK (WABC) -- UPS customers can expect temporary service impacts during Pope Francis' visit to the United States.

Due to security measures in New York, Philadelphia and Washington, DC, UPS pickups and deliveries won't be available in certain zip codes.

New York is expected to be impacted on Thursday September 24th and Friday, September 25th.

"I'm excited the pope is coming," UPS deliveryman Rashawn Clark said. "We'll see, maybe I'll get the day off if I'm lucky."

Clark was working in East Harlem, dropping off last-minute items to spruce up Our Lady Queen of Angels, where Pope Francis will visit Friday. It sits right in one of many areas where street closures soon kick in, and where those expecting to get packages will likely have to wait a little longer.

UPS officials say some of its customers may see delays in limited areas of the city, but that it has already given people a heads up.

FedEx says it has backup plans, which is a good thing for Apple customers who are expecting to get a brand new shiny iPhone 6S or 6S Plus delivered to their doorstep.

Meanwhile, workers at Gramercy Drugs know their customers will soon start calling them. The pharmacy is located at Third Avenue and 107th Street, where starting at about 3 p.m. Friday, no trucks or cars are allowed.

"We get deliveries here every day, and if the driver can't get here, we aren't going to be able to get out medication," Gramercy's Mariely Nieves said. "And our driver won't be able to take deliveries to our patients. They'll have to wait until Monday."
