NASSAU COUNTY, N.Y. (WABC) -- Several North Shore beaches are at least partially closed for shellfishing and swimming this holiday weekend because of a sewage bypass.

The Nassau County Department of Health closed six beaches to swimming on Friday as a precautionary measure. Centre Island Bay in Bayville; Centre Island Sound in Bayville; Soundside Beach in Bayville; West Harbor Beach in Bayville; Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay; and Laurel Hollow Beach in Laurel Hollow, will remain closed until further notice.

Shellfish lands in Oyster Bay Harbor and Cold Spring Harbor are temporarily closed due to a sewage bypass. The New York Department of Environmental Conservation has closed Centre Island Beach, West Harbor Beach in Bayville, and Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay to shellfishing.

The lands were designated "uncertified" Friday until water quality conditions are safe again for harvesting shellfish.
