Man charged in knifepoint robberies of at least 10 livery drivers in NYC, Westchester County

NEW YORK (WABC) -- A 30-year-old Mount Vernon man was charged with the knifepoint robberies of at least 10 livery drivers in the Bronx, Mount Vernon and Yonkers.

Allanmon Mavumkal surrendered to authorities Sunday and went before a judge in federal court in Lower Manhattan Monday.

Mavumkal was charged with one count of Hobbs Act robbery, a federal charge that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Mavumkal surrendered after police distributed surveillance video of his robbery on Sept. 21, when he hailed a livery cab in the Bronx and directed the driver to a particular location.

Upon arriving at the drop-off location, Mavumkal threatened the driver with a large knife, ordered the driver out of the cab, and then drove away -- all of which was captured on video from the cab.
