Father, son stabbed while confronting suspected moped thieves outside Bayside home, family says
BAYSIDE, Queens (WABC) -- Two men were stabbed while trying to stop an apparent moped theft outside a Bayside home early Friday morning, according to police and a family member of one of the victims.
The violence unfolded just before 12:30 a.m. in the driveway of a home on 201st Street near 40th Road. Police said a 23-year-old man and his 52-year-old relative were attacked after encountering two men in what investigators are treating as a possible robbery.
The younger victim suffered stab wounds to the lower back, right shoulder and head, while the older victim was stabbed in the right knee and slashed in the abdomen, police said. Both were taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital in stable condition.
Speaking to Eyewitness News, Leder Zambrano said the 23-year-old victim is his brother. Zambrano said his brother heard noises outside late Thursday night and discovered two young men allegedly attempting to steal his moped from the driveway.
According to Zambrano, his brother ran outside to confront the suspects and was stabbed four or five times, including in the head, while trying to stop the theft. Zambrano said he alerted their father, who also ran outside and was injured during the struggle.
Police said the suspects ultimately fled southbound on 201st Street on a moped. One was last seen wearing a dark shirt and blue jeans, while the second was dressed in all black and wearing a helmet.
Zambrano said the suspects may have left behind a cellphone before fleeing the scene, though police have not publicly commented on any evidence recovered.
No arrests have been made.
The attack happened in the 111th Precinct, which covers Bayside, Douglaston, Little Neck, Auburndale, Hollis Hills and Fresh Meadows. While the precinct remains one of the city's lower-crime areas, robbery complaints have risen this year. NYPD CompStat data shows 30 robberies reported through Aug. 23, compared with 24 during the same period last year, a 25% increase.
